Who We Are

United States Mounted Shooting is all about bringing people together through the sport of mounted shooting. We are an organization focused on keeping the sport fun, safe, and family oriented.

At USMS, safety always comes first, especially gun safety. All riders run in the 4D format at every event, earning stage points for that event and cumulative points toward year‑end awards and National Finals qualification. Shooting clean matters just as much as riding well, and we are here to help every competitor grow in both areas. Whether you are brand new to cowboy mounted shooting or already a seasoned competitor, you will find a supportive community ready to help you improve and have a great time.

Our mission at USMS is to provide a safe, fair, and highly competitive environment that supports the growth, professionalism, and long‑term success of the sport of mounted shooting. USMS is committed to advancing mounted shooting beyond a hobby and into a sport where competitors can be rewarded for their skill, dedication, and performance.

How Does It Work?

Mounted shooting is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in the country, and for good reason. It blends speed, accuracy, and solid horsemanship into an exciting, high‑energy experience. Our mounted shooting competitions use the 4D format, the same system that helped make professional barrel racing so successful. It keeps every mounted shooting event fair, exciting, and welcoming for riders of all ages and skill levels.

We believe that when competitors win, they should be compensated for their efforts. Our goal is to build a competitive environment that is engaging, rewarding, and rooted in the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and horsemanship.

Meet Our Leadership Team

Meet our leadership team — a group of owners who not only organize and run events, but saddle up and compete right alongside you. The USMS Team brings years of personal business experience, balanced leadership, and a deep understanding of the Mounted Shooting world.  We show up early, stay late, while putting in the time and dedication it takes to make every event run smoothly. When we are not managing arenas, horses, setting courses, or supporting new shooters, we are out in the arena representing our organization with pride.  We believe the USMS team brings some of the strongest supporters, the most dedicated competitors, and the leadership to strategically improve the mounting shooting world.

Rick Johnson

Rick Johnson

Co-Owner – Business Officer
Rick and his wife Lori live in the greater Salt Lake City area and have owned and operated Signature Press for over 30-years.  Rick jumped into mounted shooting in 2018 and never looked back. Rick is also the President of Utah’s Mounted Thunder, a USMS club under USMS.  Rick’s strengths have been his commitment to his family and the mounted shooting world. He has developed the strongest club in the country and continues to look nationally to expand this family oriented sport.  Rick brings steady leadership, deep experience, and a genuine commitment to the mounted shooting community.

Mike Daniels

Mike Daniels

Co-Owner – Business Officer
Mike is one of the fastest learners in the mounted shooting arena, quickly rising through the ranks and becoming a strong competitor. Mike is married to Christa Paterson who is also a fierce competitor as they travel the country to support our USMS clubs and help with events.  
Mike is a third generation power lineman with his Masters degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University.  He has two amazing daughters- Magen with her MBA and Hannah with her Law Degree.  Mike has a strong work ethic and a clear dedication to improving USMS.

Tyler Johnson

Co-Owner – Chief Operating Officer
Tyler joined the mounted shooting world in 2018 and has earned the title for being one of the fastest shooters in the country.  Tyler works alongside his father at Signature Press and runs the entire operation.  As a shooter, Tyler is known for helping young riders get started while teaching a steady practical understanding of the sport. Tyler shares the same commitment to growing mounted shooting and supporting the entire USMS community.

Tad Jolley

Tad Jolley

Co-Owner – Finance Officer
Tad has been a dedicated member of the mounted shooting community since the young age of 50 years old.  Tad and his wife JoAnn have 4 children and 4 grandchildren, and Tad’s extended professional career has been in the pharmaceutical business where he has owned and operated his own pharmacy since 2005.  Tad and JoAnn have been committed to mounted shooting and their community for decades and his love for horses and growing the sport is where you will find him.

Steve Flint

Co-Owner – Business Officer
Steve is well known as an entrepreneur and business owner in the greater Salt Lake City area.  Steve’s initial idea to purchase USMS and take the sport into the future is part of his entrepreneur mindset.  He continues to balance his former professional career as a National Sales Manager while owning several small business opportunities today.  Steve and his family are deeply involved in the horse world and stay active in the mounted shooting community. Steve brings solid experience and a genuine love for the sport.
