Mounted Shooting Event Structure
How Do Mounted Shooting Events Work?
The United States Mounted Shooting (USMS) event structure is built to create a consistent, fair, and exciting competitive environment for riders of all ages and experience levels. Every sanctioned USMS event follows a standardized framework that balances speed, accuracy, horsemanship, and safety. Understanding how events are organized—how the 4D format works, how each stage resets, how scoring is calculated, and how riders earn points throughout the season—helps competitors prepare more effectively and get the most out of every show.
Event Types in USMS
USMS events are made up of several core competition types. Each one challenges riders in different ways and contributes uniquely to stage payouts, points, standings, and season‑long progression. These event types give riders multiple ways to compete within the 4D system, earn points, and showcase different skill sets throughout the year.
Main Match
The Main Match is the central multi‑stage competition where riders earn all official points and compete in the full 4D format. Each stage resets completely, giving every rider a fresh chance to lay down a clean run, secure strong D‑placement, and earn stage‑based payouts. This format rewards consistency, precision, and horsemanship across multiple stages.
Shotgun
A fast‑paced event available only to riders entered in the Main Match, where competitors run in a 2D format. With each stage resetting, riders get new chances for clean runs, competitive D‑placement within the 2D structure, and stage‑based payouts. Shotgun entries earn points toward both event standings and year‑end standings.
Rifle
A precision‑focused event available only to riders entered in the Main Match, where competitors run in a 2D format. Each stage resets, giving riders fresh opportunities for clean runs, competitive D‑placement within the 2D structure, and stage‑based payouts. Rifle entries earn points toward event standings and year‑end standings.
Optional Side-Pots
Optional add‑on competitions that clubs may choose to offer alongside the Main Match. Side‑pots follow a clean‑shooter format, giving riders extra chances to earn payouts in categories such as Clean Shooter and the Senior Side‑Pot. These side‑pots reset every stage, require a clean run to qualify, and do not contribute to year‑end points or year‑end awards. The Showdown is a qualifying side‑pot with significant payout opportunities, but it also does not contribute to year‑end points.

Divisions
All riders compete together in the 4D format, while Buckaroos are separated into age‑based divisions for youth competition.

Divisions & 4D Format
USMS uses a performance‑based 4D format. All riders run in the 4D format at every event, earning stage points for that event as well as cumulative points toward year‑end awards and National Finals qualification within the 1-4D Divisions. Because the 4D system recalculates placement every stage, riders have constant opportunities to improve, earn payouts, and build points toward year‑end awards. As riders gain skill and consistency, their cumulative performance naturally moves them into higher D‑classes, creating a clear and rewarding progression throughout the season.

Stages: The Heart of Every Event
A stage is a timed course where riders follow a pattern and engage balloon targets. Stages test a rider’s ability to balance speed, accuracy, and horsemanship under pressure.
Because every stage is different, riders must be familiar with the pattern book, adapt quickly, and stay focused throughout the event.

Final score = Raw Stage Time + Penalties
Clean runs enable you to win stage money, earn overall awards, improve your standings, and build long‑term rider success.
Scoring & Penalties
USMS uses a raw time, clean shooter scoring system. Riders aim to complete each stage as quickly as possible while avoiding mistakes that add penalties to their final score.
Competitive Points Structure
Points and Accumulative Progression
Points are the backbone of the USMS competitive system, forming the core metric that tracks rider performance for season‑long progression.
Riders Earn Points Based On:
Clean shooter stage performance and stage D‑class results, reflecting consistency and skill.
Points Contribute To:
Event standings, year-end standings, qualification to National Finals, maturity tracking and the right to be in the top 10 at each event

Why Get Involved
USMS offers one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences in mounted shooting, combining competitive opportunity with a strong community atmosphere. Riders of all ages and skill levels can grow, compete, and connect in an environment built around fairness, safety, and family‑friendly atmosphere.
Bigger Payouts & Real Rewards
USMS is known for offering exceptional payouts. Riders earn the opportunity for a payout in each stage at every event. Unlike the class system, payouts are based on the cumulative results of all stages combined.
Family‑Friendly Community
USMS events are designed to be welcoming for families, youth riders, and newcomers, creating an environment where everyone feels included.
Clear Path for Rider Growth
Rider development begins in the 4D, and as their skill and ability grow, they can progress toward becoming competitors in the 1D.
More Ways to Compete
From Main Match stages to Rifle, Shotgun, and optional side‑pots like Clean Shooter and Senior Incentive, USMS provides riders with multiple avenues to compete, earn payouts, and highlight different aspects of their skill set.
