USMS Futurity Program

USMS is updating its Futurity offerings based on member feedback. In addition to the traditional Futurity class, every USMS‑sanctioned event will now include a separate, stand‑alone Futurity side pot. The Futurity class will continue to run in the same 2D format as last year.

Any current USMS member in good standing may enter the Futurity. Eligible horses must be 4‑ or 5‑year‑olds that have never competed in any mounted shooting event—sanctioned or unsanctioned—for money, prizes, or points before January 1, 2026. Horses may have competed in non‑mounted‑shooting events.

Each Futurity horse must be registered, nominated, and has one year of eligibility. A horse may only be entered once in the Futurity class and cannot be ridden by multiple competitors in that class.

Futurity nominations are $200. Each Futurity horse must be registered, nominated, and has one year of eligibility.

Anyone who violates Futurity guidelines or competes on a horse that isn’t properly nominated may be disqualified and could risk their USMS membership.

Here’s a look at our current futurity horses for this year, along with past nominations that show how the program has grown over time. We’re still building this futurity and don’t have a huge number of horses yet, but the payouts can be seriously impressive — and we’d love to see more people get involved. Futurity horses are young, up‑and‑coming athletes trained specifically for mounted shooting, building confidence, responsiveness, and pattern awareness from the start. The futurity program helps showcase these rising stars early in their careers and supports riders in developing well‑started horses for the sport.

Yes. Futurity horses run in the Main Match, and all Futurity points come from those results. They earn points per stage based on clean runs and how they place against all competitors, including seasoned horses.

Yes. Horses may compete in non‑mounted‑shooting disciplines without affecting eligibility. The only restriction is that they must not have competed in mounted shooting for money, prizes, or points before January 1 of their Futurity year.
